Deccan Cement: Building Foundations

High Strength, High Performance Cement for Every Need

Deccan Cements

Deccan Cements Limited (DCL), with a 1.8 million TPA plant, is a major producer of cement in South India, having been in the business of manufacturing and marketing of cement for over three decades. ‘Deccan Cements’ brand is very well entrenched in the market and occupies a leadership position amongst a multitude of competing brands. The brand is very strongly associated with the company’s by now most familiar Corporate Mascot ‘Dhamu”.

Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)

OPC is the most commonly used type of cement in the world. OPC is the basic form of cement produced by inter-grinding cement clinker with 3-5% gypsum – which is introduced to enhance the setting time of the cement to a workable 30 minutes or so.

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has classified OPC into 3 different grades namely, OPC 33 Grade, OPC 43 Grade and OPC 53 Grade cements. The grade number indicates the minimum compressive strength that the cement is required to attain at the end of 28 days eg., the minimum compressive strength of 53 Grade OPC attained on the 28th day shall not be less than 53 MPa or 530 kg/sqcm. It may be noted that OPC 33, OPC 43 and OPC 53 grades do not differ in chemical content. The only difference is that the higher grade cements are ground much finer during the final grinding process, creating a product that is much stronger and more durable than the less finely ground cement.

Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC)

PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement) is a blended cement ideal for general construction, especially in aggressive environments. It’s suitable for hydraulic structures, marine works, mass concreting (dams, dykes, retaining walls, foundations, sewage pipes), masonry mortars, and plastering.

Types of Pozzolanas in PPC:

  • Fly ash (IS:1489 Part I)
  • Calcined clay (IS:1489 Part II)

Benefits of PPC:

  • Improved workability
  • Less segregation and bleeding
  • Increased water-tightness
  • Reduced lime leaching
  • Lower heat of hydration
  • Greater resistance to sulphates and chlorides
  • Enhanced durability and long-term strength
  • Cost-effective

Strength:

  • Minimum compressive strength after 28 days: 33 MPa (330 kg/cm²)
  • Long-term strength better than OPC 53

Manufacturing:

  • Inter-grinding Portland cement clinker, gypsum, and fly ash
  • Blending OPC and fly ash (15%-35% fly ash as per IS:1489)

Color:

  • Varies with the type of pozzolana used
  • Color does not affect cement quality
  •

Portland Slag Cement (PSC)

Portland Slag Cement (PSC) is a blended cement made from Portland cement clinker, granulated blast furnace slag, and gypsum. The slag content is within specified limits.

Benefits of PSC:

  • Better workability
  • Easier finishability
  • Higher compressive strength
  • Lower permeability
  • Improved resistance to aggressive chemicals
  • Reduced free lime leaching
  • Lower heat of hydration compared to PPC

Applications:

  • General civil engineering construction
  • Coastal areas with high chloride and sulphate levels
  • Massive construction projects (e.g., dams)
  • Water retainer structures
  • Structures vulnerable to chemical attack

Standards:

  • Defined by BIS specifications IS:455/1989

Specialty Cements

Specialty Cements are modified Portland cements developed to meet specific construction needs. They involve changes to the aluminate and ferrite phases, resulting in smaller production quantities, limited availability, and higher costs.

Types of Specialty Cements:

  1. 53-S Grade OPC:

    • Conforms to BIS IS:12269-1987.
    • High early strength, used for concrete sleepers and high-rise buildings.
  2. Rapid Hardening Cement:

    • Conforms to BIS IS-8041:1990.
    • Hardens quickly, used in prefabricated concrete and road repairs.
  3. Sulphate Resistant Cement:

    • Conforms to BIS IS:12330:1988.
    • Resists sulphate attacks, suitable for coastal and underground structures.
  4. High Alumina Cement:

    • Conforms to BIS IS 6452:1989.
    • High strength development, resistant to chemical attacks, used in high-temperature conditions.
  5. Oil Well Cement:

    • Conforms to BIS IS 8229:1986.
    • Withstands high temperature and pressure, used in oil wells.
